SGPA = total grade points รท total credits. High-credit subjects move it most โ€” that's why the lever tip usually names one.

โš ๏ธ Grade letters and points follow UGC/AICTE conventions โ€” some universities use different point values. Your SGPA feeds the CGPA credit-weighted; track the full picture in our CGPA Calculator.

๐Ÿ“šThis semester, computed the way your university does

SGPA is the credit-weighted average of one semester's grades: each subject's grade points times its credits, summed, divided by total credits. Pick your grades from the UGC/AICTE letter list (or US letters on the 4-point scale), set the credits, and get your SGPA live โ€” with the biggest-lever tip showing which single subject, improved one grade step, lifts your SGPA the most, plus PDF and live-formula Excel reports.

๐Ÿ“ŠEverything you'd want to know

  • Letter-grade dropdowns (O/A+/A/B+โ€ฆ or A/Aโˆ’/B+โ€ฆ) so you enter what's on the grade card, not numbers.
  • 10-point and 4-point scales, with grades remapped intelligently when you switch.
  • The biggest-lever insight: which subject's one-step improvement gains the most SGPA.
  • Per-subject bars showing grade points earned, and an approximate percentage.
  • PDF report + Excel with live SUMPRODUCT formulas.

๐ŸงฎThe maths

SGPA = ฮฃ(grade points ร— credits) รท ฮฃ(credits)

Credits are the weights: an A+ in a 4-credit subject adds 36 grade points, while the same grade in a 2-credit lab adds 18. That's why the biggest-lever tip almost always names a high-credit subject โ€” improving where the credits are is the efficient path.

Grades of 9, 8, 10, 7, 9 with credits 4, 4, 3, 3, 2 give (36+32+30+21+18) รท 16 = 8.56 SGPA. One grade step up in 4-credit Mathematics lifts it to 8.81 โ€” the single best investment on the card.

๐Ÿ’กSGPA and CGPA

  • SGPA is one semester; CGPA is all semesters credit-weighted together โ€” track the full journey in our CGPA Calculator.
  • Early semesters set the tone: with few credits banked, each semester moves your CGPA a lot.
  • Electives with high credits deserve the same seriousness as cores โ€” the formula doesn't know the difference.
  • Keep your own grade record each semester; transcript errors are easiest to fix early.

๐Ÿ’ก Frequently Asked Questions

How is SGPA calculated?+

Multiply each subject's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. Five subjects with grades 9, 8, 10, 7, 9 and credits 4, 4, 3, 3, 2 give an SGPA of 8.56. This calculator does it live from letter grades.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?+

SGPA covers one semester; CGPA is the credit-weighted aggregate of all semesters so far. A great SGPA moves your CGPA more in early semesters, when fewer credits are banked against it.

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?+

The common approximation is SGPA ร— 9.5 (CBSE-style) or ร— 10, but universities prescribe their own rule. This tool shows the ร—9.5 figure for reference โ€” check your ordinance for the official conversion.

What is a good SGPA?+

On the 10-point scale, 8+ is excellent and 9+ outstanding; many placements shortlist around 7.0โ€“7.5. One strong high-credit subject can move your SGPA more than two weak low-credit ones โ€” the lever tip shows exactly which.

Do labs and electives count in SGPA?+

Yes โ€” everything with credits counts, weighted by those credits. A 2-credit lab matters half as much as a 4-credit theory subject, but it still matters; a poor lab grade is an unnecessary leak.
