๐ฑWhat a SIP really does
A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) means investing a fixed amount at regular intervals โ usually monthly โ into a mutual fund or index fund. Its power comes from two forces working together: rupee-cost averaging (you automatically buy more units when prices are low) and compounding(your returns start earning their own returns). Over long periods, the gains can dwarf the amount you actually invested.
๐Do more than a basic calculator
This tool goes past a single number. Use the mode switch and advanced options to:
- Future Value โ see what a monthly SIP grows into over time.
- Target Amount โ work backwards: the exact monthly SIP to reach a goal like โน1 crore.
- Time to Goal โ how many years a chosen SIP takes to hit a target.
- Step-up SIP โ increase your investment a little every year (say 10%) and watch the corpus jump.
- Lumpsum + SIP โ add a one-time starting amount that compounds alongside your monthly investment.
- Inflation-adjusted value โ see what your future corpus is really worth in today's money.
๐งฎThe formula behind it
P is the monthly investment, i is the monthly return (annual return รท 12 รท 100), and n is the number of months. The final (1 + i) reflects investing at the start of each month. For step-up SIPs there's no simple closed formula, so this calculator simulates every month precisely โ which is why the schedule and totals are exact.
๐กGetting the most from a SIP
- Start early: because of compounding, an extra 5 years at the start matters more than a bigger SIP later.
- Step it up: raising your SIP with your salary each year can add lakhs to the final corpus.
- Stay invested through dips: falling markets are when rupee-cost averaging works hardest for you.
- Judge goals in real terms: always check the inflation-adjusted value so a big future number isn't misleading.
๐ก Frequently Asked Questions
How does the SIP calculator work?+
It simulates your investment month by month using your monthly amount, expected return, and duration โ including any annual step-up or starting lumpsum โ to project the final corpus, total invested, and wealth gained.
Can it tell me the SIP needed for a goal?+
Yes. Switch to 'Target Amount' mode, enter your goal, expected return, and time frame, and it calculates the exact monthly SIP required.
What is a step-up SIP?+
A step-up SIP increases your monthly investment by a set percentage each year (for example 10%), usually in line with salary growth. Enable it under advanced options to see how much faster your corpus grows.
Are the returns guaranteed?+
No. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and vary year to year. The return rate you enter is an assumption for estimation only โ actual results can be higher or lower.
Why show an inflation-adjusted value?+
A large corpus decades from now buys less than the same amount today. The inflation-adjusted figure shows your future corpus in today's purchasing power, so your goal stays realistic.
