๐Ÿ““ How to Take Notes That Actually Help You Revise

1 June 2026 ยท 6 min read

There are two kinds of notes: notes that look beautiful, and notes that raise marks. Occasionally they overlap, but the decoration is not what does the work. Good notes have one job โ€” to make future revision fast and testable. Here is how the best students take them.

The golden rule: compress, don't copy

Copying the board or textbook word-for-word is transcription, not learning. The value of note-taking comes from compression โ€” forcing the material through your brain and out in fewer, your-own words. A page of textbook should become a third of a page of notes. If your notes are as long as the source, they are photocopies with extra effort.

The Cornell method (the classic that works)

  • โ–ธDivide the page: a narrow cue column on the left, wide notes area on the right, summary strip at the bottom.
  • โ–ธDuring class: capture ideas in the right column โ€” short phrases, abbreviations, diagrams.
  • โ–ธSame evening: write questions in the left cue column ('Define osmosis?', 'Formula for CI?') opposite each chunk.
  • โ–ธTo revise: cover the right side, answer the cue questions from memory. Your notes just became a self-test.

Other formats worth knowing

  • โ–ธMind maps โ€” best for connected topics (history chapters, biology systems): central idea, branches, single keywords per branch.
  • โ–ธFormula sheets โ€” one page per subject of every formula, built as you go; gold in the final week.
  • โ–ธError log โ€” a notebook purely of your past mistakes and their corrections; the highest-scoring notebook you will ever own.

Small habits, big difference

  • โ–ธLeave white space โ€” cramped pages cannot absorb later additions.
  • โ–ธDate and title every page; future-you searches by chapter.
  • โ–ธRewrite nothing 'to make it neat' โ€” spend that hour testing yourself on it instead.
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: The same-evening review is the highest-leverage 10 minutes in note-taking: fresh memory fills the gaps that would be mysteries in three weeks.
